S-38.130 Licentiate course on Telecommunications Technology
Requisites
To successfully pass the course and achieve 4 credits, you should:

Write a paper on a subject, the paper totaling in approximately two-coloumn,
single-spaced
around 10 pages according
to the styleguide.
The content of the paper is strictly supervised. Paper grading will be
done based on quality, not on the quantity!

Prepare 3~5 questions and your model solutions on the basis of each paper.
Please submit them directly to to Prof.
Kantola.

Give a presentation (25-30 minutes + 15-20 minutes for discussion = 45
minutes) for your paper

Act as an opponent to at least one of the presentations. The presenter
will provide you with his/her paper in advance. You will need to prepare
several questions and your duty in this presentation is to keep the discussion
alive and make the questions clear. You should send your questions and
model solutions to the professor at least one day before the presentation
begins. You will also need to grade the presentation and the paper.
The grading form may be obtained here
in .pdf format. This form is to be used only by the opponent.

Succeed to attend to 70% of the sessions.

Pass the examination. All questions of the examination will be derived
from the seminar papers and/or the course book. This point will be clearly
announced later.
The presentation paper has to be delivered to Prof. Kantola no later
than agreed on Feb 7th. The delivery of the paper to the opponent remains
to be separately negotiated between the opponent and you. You are also
required to deliver your paper in electronic format: preferably in PDF
or
MSWord documents to Prof.
Kantola and the course assistant.
Your paper should cover its topic from the following viewpoints. You
may apply them to your subject where appropriate (The ratio of each viewpoint
is approximately given) :

Introduction (10%)

State of the art (20): Architecture and protocols including relevant
specifications, RFCs and Internet drafts.

Problems (25%): you will need to give a clear description of the problems
in the field of your topic..

Protocol design(35%): you will need to give a clear description of the
relevant protocol design in your topic. You may describe and compare
the protocol in such aspects as complexity, scalability, stability, service
support, availability of open source implementations, availability of commercial
implementations and so on.

Conclusion (10%)
Note, you may not be limited within the above viewpoints. Try to cover
any valuable viewpoints which will enrich your paper.
Schedule
The first meeting of the course will be held on Feb. 5th, at 15:00 - 17:00
in lecture hall S5. There will be the first introductory lecture and the
seminar subjects will be dealt out. The presentations will be held
as agreed during the first meeting. The examination is arranged in May 16th at 13:00-16:00 o'clock in S3.

Note!!: To even qualify for grading you need to participate in 70% of
