The contents of the course
The outline of the course:
- Signaling
- PCM
- Switching matrixes
- Reliability issues in telecommunication networks
- The synchronization of the telecommunication networks
- Excursions and other happenings
- Introduction to the laboratory of Telecommunications (DX200-environment and other laboratories)
The main contents of the lectures and exercises are available here.
The schedule of the exercises
The successful passing of the course requires the application of theoretical and practical skills presented in the lectures. This is done by doing exercises. The student should return the exercises so that they can be graded.
To be able to take the course it is required that at least 13 of the 28 exercises are correctly solved. If the student has solved 13 exercises, he/she will get 2 additional points to the examination. More points may be earned by solving more exercises. If all of the 28 exercises are correctly solved the student earns 6 additional points to the examination.
The participation to the exercise lectures is not obligatory, although it is recommended. However, the exercises are given in Finnish while all of the exercise material is provided in English.
The exercises should be returned before the exercise lecture to the box with the course code (s-38.110) marked under the laboratory notice board.
There will be six exercises in total:
Material
In addition to the course lecture material (slides, partly in Finnish), the course material required is:
- Joseph Y. Hui: Switching and traffic theory for integrated broadband
networks chapters 1-5.
- Roger L. Freeman: Telecommunications System Engineering 3rd ed. Chapters
4, 8, 9, 13 and 16.The foreign students will also read chapter 15 as an introduction to ATM.
- Syed R. Ali: Digital Switching Systems, System Reliability and Analysis,
pages 147-164
- Alex Gillespie: Access networks, Technology and V5 Interfacing
- The CAL-manuals of the LM Ericsson Signaling software
The lecture material (slides, partly in Finnish) and answers to the exercises (everything in English) will also be delivered as "prujus" via Otapaino.
Course requirements
To get credits (and a grade) from this course,
